Italian Cheeses

At romano, we know that cheese is important to a lot of people.  These are the type of people who want to buy more than just cheddar at their local grocer.  Romano isn’t just going to talk about romano cheese, we’ll share the love and look at all the different cheeses.

There are certain types of cheese that are going to work with certain types of food.  Let’s take at look at Italian food:

  • Mozzarella – planning on making lasagna, or what about a homemade pizza – this is the cheese you’ll want to have on hand.  Be careful though, this type of cheese is made from buffalo’s milk if it is an authentic Italian mozzarella.
  • Mascarpone -  this mild flavored cheese is traditionally used in most Italian recipes where whipped cream would normally be present.
  • Pecorino – Pecorino Romano or Toscano are your two choices when we talk about this variety of Italian cheese.  Made from ewe’s milk, it is used in both desserts and savory dishes (depending on fresh or aged).

Maybe you are preparing a special pasta; or maybe its just something as simple as a piece of one of these cheeses with a little melon and prisciutto; either way, you should have no problem finding the right cheese to go with your meal.

There’s Something Special About Romano

Romano cheese it one of the most popular cheeses in the world.  Not only can it be enjoyed early in life as a cheese for the table, but Romano is even more glorious after it has been properly aged.  While this cheese can get pricey, it is well worth the expense.  The other good thing is that Romano cheese goes a long way with just a little bit.

And make no mistake, this is no mild cheese.  Romano has a distinctly sharp taste that with a hint of saltiness only works to enhance the taste.  And since this Romano cheese is named after one of the most famous cities in Italy (Rome), it shouldn’t surprise you to know how popular this cheese is in Italy.  But even though the Romans were making Romano even before Jesus walked the earth, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t gained fame and notoriety in other parts of the world.

If you are looking for authentic Italian Romano cheese then a variety called Pecorino Romano is the only way to go.  This cheese is protected by the government, so if a cheese says Pecorino, you know it was made in Italy between the months of October and July and can only occur in a certain region of the country.
